Importance of Being Koi

Excerpt from Book/Illustration Project

Water is essential for movement. In most ponds of life, we tend to focus more on our place within the schools of fish and less on the flow of the water. Always pay attention to how a situation feels. Your fins must always find movement in order to survive.

Know no mirrors. Reflection in a pool of water comes from looking down with light-reflecting up. Koi fish only see each other’s marks so they are not defined by their own vanity. True self comes within.

Looking at objects submersed in water is often distorted, so the best perspective in evaluating any situation is from beneath the surface.

Life will often throw gifts to the surface. Feast in the joyful fury but never rely on it to sustain you every day. Exercise your own sensibilities to forage, feed and grow.
